“The observer may also be the architect of the scene.”
The Onopticon is Hakkı Tan's analytic model for systems that do not merely observe subjects but pre-structure the field in which subjects become recognisable, eligible, actionable, and contestable. It is not a synonym for surveillance or algorithms; it identifies the stronger closure produced when infrastructures compose recognition, access, action, and weak contestability.
An analytic model for systems that do not merely observe subjects, but construct the field in which subjects become observable and actionable.
Where is power exercised before a visible command or decision, through the composition of recognition, access, movement, and contestability?
The Onopticon is not a new name for surveillance, algorithms, or every digital system. It identifies a stronger configuration in which infrastructures pre-structure the practical field of possible action and a viable outside becomes costly or unavailable.
It supplies the infrastructural mechanism of the Reality Paradigm and helps explain the field within which Homovictimus must act tactically.
